On Thursday four Thai nationals tragically lost their lives in northern Israel after a rocket attack from Lebanon, Thailand’s Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa announced. The attack struck close to the town of Metula, killing four foreign workers, including the Thai citizens, and a local Israeli farmer. An additional Thai citizen was injured in the strike.
Approximately 30,000 Thai nationals reside in Israel, working primarily in agriculture, attracted by the higher wages compared to Thailand. Since the onset of hostilities with Hamas on October 7, 2023, Thailand has reported 39 Thai nationals killed in Israel.
Many Thai nationals were caught in the initial attacks, with over two dozen believed to have been taken captive by militants. In a brief truce in November, 23 Thai hostages were released, but the conflict has continued to affect the Thai community deeply.
Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa expressed his sorrow and reiterated Thailand’s call for peace, urging all involved parties to prioritize innocent civilians and return to diplomatic solutions.
