A Tamil Nadu fisherman suffered an eye injury after he was allegedly attacked by the Sri Lankan Navy, which also arrested 14 fishermen for allegedly violating maritime boundaries, an official said. The injured fisherman has been identified as Johnson from Rameswaram and was injured in the eye when he was attacked by the personnel of the Sri Lanka Navy late on Wednesday, he said.
Further, 14 fishermen who belong to Nagapattinam district were detained by the Lankan Navy. Their ship was thus impounded. The twin incidents have caused much concern among fishermen, fishermen’s representatives said. Last month, a fisherman from Vanagiri village in Mayiladuthurai district was injured after he was shot by the Indian Navy as they tried to intercept a “suspicious boat” in Palk Bay, near the maritime border with Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, due to the formation of low pressure in the Bay of Bengal region, the Tamil Nadu Fisheries Department has advised fishermen to venture into the sea, sources reported. Officials also advised those in the deep sea to return to nearby ports and keep their ships safe.
