A rocky alpine trail is emerging between two glaciers in Switzerland, which the local ski resort says is the first in at least 2,000 years after Europe’s hottest summer ever. The Glacier 3000 ski resort in western Switzerland reported that this year’s ice melt was about three times the 10-year average, meaning that between the Scex Rouge and Zanfleuron glaciers, bare rock can now be seen at 2,800 meters and the mountain pass will be completely exposed by the end of this months.
“I measured 15 meters of ice here about 10 years ago, so all the ice has melted in the meantime,” said Mauro Fischer, a glaciologist at the Institute of Geography at the University of Bern. What we’ve seen this year and this summer is just remarkable and really beyond anything we’ve measured so far,” he added, referring to the rate of ice melt. Since last winter, the Alps have experienced two major heat waves in the early summer, bringing relatively little snow. Glaciers in the Alps are now on track for their biggest mass loss in at least 60 years of record keeping, data shows.
