Sports Focus: David and Rassies mashed half-centuries to lead South Africa win over India

David Miller and Rassie van der Dussen hit 500 to give South Africa a seven-wicket win over India in the first match of the Twenty20 International on Thursday. Chasing 212 to win, South Africa’s top scorer faltered but Miller and Van der Dussen robbed. 131 runs from 10 overs in the fourth non-stop wicket to get the victory with five balls left. Van der Dussen made 75 unbeaten off 46 balls, including six six. The unbeaten 64-off Miller in 31 off the ball also featured six sixs as South Africa put out a huge success in T20 cricket. The defeat ended India winning 12 games this way, India who produced a strong 211-4 after being beaten.

Kishan formed a century-long partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad (23) and ShreyasIyer (36) as the managers climbed 102-1 on the road to their innings. Keshav Maharaj completed Kishan’s blitz after dropping two sixs and two fours in the 13-run over. Kishan’s 80-run partnership with Iyer came with two runs in the ball and India did not take his foot off the pedal. Captain Rishabh Pant scored 29 and deputy captain Hardik Pandya struck 31 unbeaten in 12 balls as they passed well in the 200-mark.

South Africa lost captain Temba Bavuma and Dwaine Pretorius (29) in the first six overs. But Miller and van der Dussen put South Africa back on track by striking out athletes. India has rested a few key players, including regular captain Rohit Sharma and ViratKohli. KL Rahul, who was to lead the team in Rohit’s absence, will miss the series due to a groin injury and Pant is filling in as captain. The second game in a five-game series is in Cuttack on Sunday.
