Chennai: Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje filed an affidavit before the Madras High Court on Tuesday, offering an apology to the people of Tamil Nadu for her remarks made following the Rameshwaram Cafe blast in Bengaluru earlier this year.
The March 1 low-intensity explosion at the popular Bengaluru eatery led to Ms. Karandlaje linking the incident to the people of Tamil Nadu, a statement that resulted in her being booked by the Madurai police. In response, she sought to quash the criminal proceedings against her by moving the court.
In the affidavit submitted to Justice G Jayachandran, Karandlaje expressed regret for her comments, stating that they were made “without any intention” to hurt the sentiments and feelings of Tamil Nadu’s people. She emphasized that she had already retracted her remarks and issued “profound apologies” through social media platforms.
“I state that I have the highest respect and regard for the history, rich culture, tradition, and people of Tamil Nadu. I had or have no intention whatsoever to hurt the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu by any conduct of mine,” the Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Labour & Employment wrote in her affidavit.
Ms. Karandlaje reiterated her apology, requesting the court to take it on record “in the interest of justice.”
The court has adjourned the case to September 5 for further hearing.
