Shane Warne, Australia’s legendary spinner, died on Friday at the age of 52. Warne is said to have died of a suspected heart attack.
A statement on the Fox website said that Warne was found unresponsive in his villa and he could not be resuscitated even after the best efforts by the medical staff. Meanwhile, Warne’s family has requested for privacy.
Warne took 708 wickets in 145 Test matches during his illustrious career. He represented Australia in 194 One-Day Internationals, taking 293 wickets. He was also a strong batsman, having amassed 3,154 runs in Test cricket. He scored 1,018 runs in the 50 over cricket format.
The Australian cricket team has been struck with a second terrible blow in less than a day, following the loss of Rod Marsh on Friday after a heart attack last week. He was 74 years old and was in an induced coma after the heart attack.
Warne Records and Achievements
With 708 wickets in Tests and 293 in ODIs, Warne is the top ranking leg spinner in history of cricket.
The only Australian to cross the 700-wickets mark in the Test format. He was the first cricketer to cross the 700 mark in 2006 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
His 708 Test wickets is the second-highest in international Cricket; only behind Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka, who holds the world record of 800 Test match wickets.
The leg spinner took a total of 1001 international wickets, which trails only behind Muttiah Muralitharan’s 1347. In fact, the two are the only bowlers till now to have a four-digit wicket tally in internationals.
His score of 96 wickets in Tests in 2005 is the highest number of wickets taken by any bowler in a calendar year.
