Culture Focus: The first female scientist statue displays celebrated by astronomers in Italy

Astronomer Margherita Hack became the first female scientist to be honored with a public statue in Italy. Hack, born in 1922 and died in 2013, was the highest man in the country for decades, in which he was a well-known communicator and recommended by the inspiring generations of young women to pursue a career in science.

A bronze monument, by Italian artist Sissi, was unveiled on June 13 – the day after what would have been the 100th Hack’s birthday – near the University of Milan’s main campus. The picture shows the Hack is a hack from the vortex, representing the special shape of the galaxy. He pretends to hold and look through the telescope, the inspiring position he had taken while taking pictures. Sissi was one of eight women who proposed the sculptural designs, and was selected as the winner by a judge. The clip is sponsored by the non-profit organization Deloitte Foundation; covers less than 200 social symbols of women in Italy.

In 1964, Florence-born Hack became the first woman to lead Trieste’s Astronomical Observatory, a role she held until her retirement in 1987. She also became the first Italian woman to become a full professor of astronomy. To mark the 100th birthday of the astronomer, the Italian postal service issued a stamp identifying him. He was specialized in spectroscopy and stellar evolution, and he appeared frequently on television, talking about science in public. He was also a politician, campaigning for gay rights and abortion and against the influence of the Vatican City on Italian public life.
