Technology Focus: First meeting of the National Advisory Committee of the National Initiative for Science, Technology and Innovation Statistics

The first meeting of the National Advisory Committee of the National Initiative for Science, Technology and Innovation Statistics (NISTIS) discussed the way forward for this initiative. It has been decided that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Center for Science, Technology and Innovation Statistics will be prepared by the Project Monitoring Unit (PMU) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru.

Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, Professor Ajay K Sood, who chaired the meeting, emphasized the importance of this initiative and the urgent need to establish a center to begin focused work on it. Data is critical to knowledge-based decision making. While the data is collected by various ministries, its centralized management is essential for making crucial decisions in the future,” he emphasized.

The Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Dr. Welcoming the initiative, Srivari Chandrasekhar highlighted the array of data already available in the department and stressed the need to supplement it. Senior Advisor, DST, Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, emphasized the need for a one-time coordinated effort to bring together various data collection efforts and presented the tentative structure of the center. He cited examples of international best practices for such efforts in the US and Japan. Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Director Professor Govindan Rangarajan elaborated on the functioning of the future center at IISc.Experts from scientific institutions discussed the management, functioning and further progress of the center.
