Today Justice Sanjiv Khanna was sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan, succeeding Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, who retired yesterday. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath at a ceremony held at 10 a.m.
Justice Khanna, 64, will hold the position for six months until his expected retirement on May 13, 2025. Known for his extensive experience in constitutional law, taxation, arbitration, and environmental law, Justice Khanna has been part of several landmark rulings. Notably, he was instrumental in upholding the validity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), declaring the electoral bonds scheme unconstitutional for its lack of transparency, and ruling on the scrapping of Article 370, which had provided special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
Hailing from a family with deep legal roots, Justice Khanna is the son of former Delhi High Court judge Justice Dev Raj Khanna and the nephew of the respected Supreme Court judge H.R. Khanna. Starting his career in 1983 with the Delhi Bar Council, he was appointed to the Delhi High Court in 2005 and joined the Supreme Court in 2019.
Justice Khanna’s tenure follows an emotional farewell from his predecessor, Chief Justice Chandrachud, who expressed gratitude for his time in office, saying, “There is no greater feeling than being able to serve those in need.”
