Rishi Sunak’s supporters claimed that the Indian-origin former chancellor had reached the 100-member

Rishi Sunak’s supporters claimed on Saturday that the Indian-origin former chancellor had reached the 100-member threshold needed to be shortlisted in the race to replace Liz Truss as Conservative Party leader and British prime minister. The 42-year-old frontman’s numbers continue to grow as former prime minister Boris Johnson returned from a Caribbean holiday and his camp also claimed to have the minimum 100 MPs needed for a possible leadership bid.

Neither Sunak nor Johnson have officially announced their intention to contest the leadership election, with House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt the only candidate to officially announce her candidacy so far. However, the former Chancellor of the Exchequer comfortably took the lead with some heavyweight Tory ministers and MPs from various Tory factions standing behind him and the betting odds also continue to rise in favour.

Rishi had the right plan in the summer and I think it’s the right plan now,” former deputy prime minister Dominic Raab told. “I think he’s the best candidate to bring some stability, give confidence to millions of workers and businesses across the country,” he said. Raab warned against the return of former leader Johnson, who was hit by the partygate scandal, just over three months after he was forced to stand down, pointing out that the British parliament was still investigating whether he had misled the Commons about blocking law-breaking parties in Downing Street.

“We can’t go backwards. We can’t have another episode of Groundhog Day, soap operas, partygate. We have to move the country and the government forward,” he said. It came as Johnson was pictured on Sky News flying back to London from the Dominican Republic with his wife and children when he signaled to allies his intention to go to 10 Downing Street again.

The number of MPs who have publicly backed him for a return stands at 53, with former home secretary Priti Patel among his prominent backers, and his loyalists are confident he will reach the 100 MP mark by 2pm local time on Monday make a short selection. “Boris has a mandate to deliver our elected manifesto and demonstrably deliver the right big decisions. I support him in the leadership contest,” she wrote on Twitter.

If only one candidate remains standing by then on Monday, next week’s online Tory membership vote, with the winner announced next Friday, will not have to take place. If either candidate wins 156 MPs, then the race would automatically be narrowed down to a shortlist of two – given the Conservative MPs’ 357 MPs, which is not enough to support at least 100 for a third candidate. Meanwhile, speculation has been rife among supporters of both candidates that Sunak and Johnson may be working on some sort of deal.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Sunak is expected to reject any offer of a cabinet role during the leadership race as he is a front-runner and has already resigned from Johnson’s government once this year. However, no categorical statement of rejection has been issued, so if Johnson does indeed triumph, the job remains open. Sunak is being urged to offer Johnson a cabinet role such as home secretary to agree to back down from any vote with Tory members. Sunak edged ahead in the first round of Tory MPs’ voting and lost to Truss last month in a leadership battle in a vote of 170,000 Tory members who either favored Truss’s now-failed pledge to cut taxes or thought Sunak was in a hurry. Johnson’s downfall by resigning as chancellor.
