Mumbai, November 2, 2024: In a stunning display of counter-attacking batting, Rishabh Pant turned the tide for India on Day 2 of the third and final Test against New Zealand, smashing 60 runs off just 59 balls. Coming in at a critical juncture with India struggling at 85/4, Pant’s quickfire innings provided a much-needed boost, drawing praise and comparisons to legendary players like Vivian Richards and Virender Sehwag.
Pant faced a challenging task after India lost three quick wickets within two overs. Taking the crease at a precarious moment, he ended Day 1 with a single off his only delivery. On Day 2, however, he unleashed a fierce onslaught on New Zealand’s bowlers, particularly targeting Ajaz Patel who had earlier rattled the Indian batting lineup. Pant’s aggressive approach forced Patel out of the attack after conceding runs at over six per over.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, during commentary, noted Pant’s similarity to renowned game-changers. “Pant carries a certain reputation for destroying bowling attacks. Players with that reputation include legends like Viv Richards, Kapil Dev, and Ian Botham,” Shastri remarked, adding that Pant’s fearless style recalls the powerful hitting of Sehwag.
Pant’s 60-run blitz included setting the record for the fastest Indian half-century against New Zealand in Tests, reaching the milestone in just 36 balls. His innings provided a much-needed momentum shift, contrasting with Shubman Gill’s cautious approach, and showcased his ability to dominate under pressure.
Pant’s heroics have energized India’s batting effort and given fans another memorable innings to celebrate, underscoring his growing influence in the team and adding yet another chapter to his already exciting career.
