Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday mistakenly read an old budget speech seven minutes before it was interrupted. He was later stopped by the main whip. The opposition soon created an uproar and sat in the well of the Rajasthan Assembly over Gehlot’s mistake, leading to the adjournment of the House for 30 minutes.
Former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje hit out at Gehlot for stupidity.” 8 minutes CM kept reading old budget. When I was CM I checked and read it repeatedly before presenting budget. You can imagine how safe the state is in the hands of a CM who reads out old budget,” the BJP leader said.
BJP leader Gulab Chand Kataria said in the House “This budget cannot be presented. Has it been leaked?”
Speaker C P Joshi asked them to maintain order, but the opposition continued its agitation. After the adjournment, the BJP MLAs staged a sit-in in the well of the House. “Rajasthan Assembly offended by CM Gehlot’s old budget presentation today,” BJP MLA Rajendra Rathore said.
Amid criticism, the chief minister replied, “You (Opposition) can only point out if there is a difference between what is written in the budget in my hand and the copy given to the members of the House. If the page was added to the copy of my budget by mistake, then how does the issue of budget leakage arise?”.
Later, the proceedings of the House resumed and Gehlot presented his budget. “I’m sorry, what happened was a mistake,” he said.
This is the last budget of the Gehlot government as Rajasthan heads for assembly elections later this year. For the first time, the budget will be shown live in all government and private colleges in Rajasthan.
Earlier, Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies Pratap Singh Khachariyas, the budget was special as it will encourage savings, provide relief to the masses and boost growth in the state.
Colleges have been asked to organize live telecast of the budget speech in auditoriums/meeting halls so that maximum number of students, teachers and heads of institutions can watch it. The Budget will also be telecast live on social media platforms.
