Rainfall is expected in almost all parts of the country in the next few days, with hailstorm in northwest, central and eastern parts of India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in its latest forecast released on Sunday. No heat conditions are likely to develop anywhere in the next five days, the IMD said.
Multiple cyclonic circulations and western disturbances over Pakistan are forecast to be responsible for this activity. Northwest India is likely to experience gusty winds in the next five days, apart from scattered showers and thunderstorms.
“Generally in May, the influence of Western Disturbance is not that strong, but since we are seeing an active Western Disturbance, northwest India will be affected,” Naresh Kumar, a scientist at IMD. “There are several circulations that are also creating low pressure zones across the country and therefore rainfall is expected.
Temperatures are below normal at most places in India
An active western disturbance could bring hail to Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh from April 30 to May 2, Uttarakhand for the next five days, parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi from May 1 to 2 and Rajasthan from April 30 to 3 May, the forecast said.
Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim and Maharashtra are also likely to experience hailstorm between April 30 and May 1. Widespread rainfall is expected over central India with hailstorm affecting west Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh today. Parts of South India – including Kerala, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu and parts of Karnataka are expected to receive very heavy rainfall.
“These conditions are favorable for the pre-monsoon season,” Kumar said. The IMD has warned states to set up anti-hail nets and store produce in safer locations to mitigate the impact of rain and hail on agricultural activities.
