New Delhi railway station witnessed a massive rush on Sunday night raising fears of a stampede-like situation similar to the deadly February 15 Maha Kumbh incident that claimed 18 lives.
The congestion peaked around 9 PM at platforms 12 and 13 due to the delay of multiple trains, including the Shiv Ganga Express (8:05 PM), Jammu Rajdhani Express (9:25 PM), Lucknow Mail (10:00 PM), and Magadh Express (9:05 PM). The Swatantrata Senani Express, scheduled for 9:15 PM, was already occupying a platform, further worsening the situation. Reports suggest passengers jumped barricades and rushed towards their trains, adding to the chaos.
Delhi Police and railway officials swiftly implemented crowd control measures to prevent any mishaps. An RPF official confirmed that forces were deployed as a precaution, and the situation was brought under control as trains started moving.
The incident brought back memories of the tragic Maha Kumbh stampede, where confusion over train announcements in Prayagraj led to 18 deaths. The Centre later allocated ₹2.01 crore in compensation to affected families, with ₹10 lakh for each deceased victim’s family.
