July 1, 2024 – A chaotic scene unfolded in Parliament on Monday morning as Congress MP Rahul Gandhi delivered a blistering attack on the ruling BJP and its ideological mentor, the RSS. Armed with a copy of the Constitution and photos of religious icons including Lord Shiva, Prophet Mohammed, Jesus Christ, and Guru Nanak Singh, Gandhi accused the BJP of promoting violence against minorities.
Amid frenzied screams from MPs on both sides of the aisle, Home Minister Amit Shah demanded an apology from Gandhi, while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh claimed Gandhi was spreading false information regarding ex-gratia payments to families of Agniveer military recruits killed on duty. Prime Minister Narendra Modi rose twice to counter Gandhi’s remarks.
Gandhi declared “The specific trigger for the uproar was Gandhi’s pointed accusation that the BJP and RSS perpetuate violence against minorities, Our great men spoke about non-violence, but those who call themselves Hindus talk only about hatred… aap Hindu ho hi nahin (you are not a Hindu).”
In response, PM Modi hit back, saying, “Calling the entire Hindu society violent is a serious issue.” During his second intervention, which drew jeers from opposition members, Modi stated that the Constitution taught him to respect the post of the Leader of the Opposition, currently held by Gandhi.
Rahul Gandhi’s Fiery Speech
Gandhi began his speech by alleging a “full-scale and systematic assault on the idea of India, the Constitution, and on people who resisted the attack on the Constitution.” He claimed many opposition leaders were “personally attacked,” referencing Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is currently in Tihar Jail following his arrest in the liquor policy case. Kejriwal’s AAP is part of the Congress-led INDIA opposition bloc.
This heated exchange highlights the deepening political divide and underscores the contentious atmosphere in Indian politics as leaders clash over fundamental issues and accusations of violence and corruption.
