Disaster Focus: The adverse impacts of littered single use plastic items plastic on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems

In line with the explicit request of the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, to abolish the once-used 2022 plastic materials, the Department of Environment, Forestry and Climate Change, the Government of India introduced the Ammunition Regulations for Plastic Waste Management 20, 2021, 2021, 2021 Promoting the spirit of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsava’, a decisive step in curbing the pollution caused by discarded and uncontrolled plastic waste is being taken by the country.

At the fourth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly in 2019, India had reviewed a resolution to address the pollution of once-used plastic products, recognizing the urgent need for the international community to focus on this very important issue. The adoption of this resolution by UNEA 4 was an important step. At the recently concluded 5th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly in March 2022, India engaged constructively with all member states in order to advance consensus on the decision to take international action on plastic pollution.

The Government of India has taken strong measures to reduce land pollution caused by the installation of Plastic for Special Use. Prohibited list includes – earmarks with plastic sticks, plastic balloon sticks, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, decorative polystyrene (Thermocol), decorative plates, plastic cups, cups, scissors, cutlery , grass, trays, wrapping or packing films in candy boxes, invitation cards, cigarette packs, plastic bags or PVC banners under 100 microns, connectors.

Amendments to the Plastic Waste Management Act, 2021, also prohibits the manufacture, import, storing, distribution, sale and use of plastic bags with a thickness of less than 75 microns from 30 September, 2021, and less than 100 thickness. and 20 microns from 31 December, 2022.

The Department of Environment, Forestry and Climate Change has also announced the Manufacturers’ Compliance Guidelines for the Installation of Plastics as the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Regulations, 2022 February 16, 2022. Extended Responsibilities of the Manufacturer (EPR) is responsible for the manufacturer’s production (EPR). product management until the end of its life. The guidelines will provide a framework for strengthening the global economy of plastic packaging waste, encourage the development of alternative alternatives to plastic packaging and provide the next steps to move forward with sustainable plastic packaging for businesses.

Capacity building workshops have been organized for MSME units to provide technical assistance in the production of other plastic materials that are restricted to the use and involvement of CPCB / SPCBs / PCCs and the Department of Small and Medium Enterprises in the Central Chemical Engineering Center (CIPET) and their institutions. Provisions have also been made to support such businesses in eliminating disposable plastics. The Indian government has also taken steps to promote the establishment and provision of an ecosystem to accelerate the entry and availability of alternatives across the country.

In order to effectively implement the ban on SUP identifiers from 1 July 2022, national and provincial control rooms will be set up and special teams will be formed to monitor the illegal production, import, storage, distribution, sale and use of one restricted plastic things. The States and Union Territories have been asked to set up border checkpoints to stop inter-provincial travel of any used and banned plastic items.

 The CPCB Grievance Redressal App has been launched to empower citizens to help prevent plastic hazards. For greater public access, PRAKRITI – mascot was also launched on April 5th.Government has been taking steps to raise awareness about the use of one plastic the ban will only be achieved through effective negotiations and joint actions of all stakeholders and active public participation, the Minister believes.
