An argument erupted in the 34th match of IPL 2022 when they faced Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals Rishabh Pant who lost his cool and asked the batsmen to leave when the referee did not say no ball reached the waist. In the last over, DC needed to score 36 runs, Rovman Powell fired the first three balls over the ropes, and Obed McCoy’s third ball into the top toss. Pant was not happy as he heard that it was supposed to be a no-ball that reached the waist, and he told Powell and his partner to come back. Assistant coach Shane Watson is the mediator, and PravinAmre took to the court to speak to the referee, sparking the first major IPL controversy this year.
As a result of his actions, Pant was fined for all his match money, and Amre was slapped with a one-game ban. Looking back on the incident, former Pakistani athlete Shoaib Akhtar called Pant a ‘child’ and said that as a captain, one has to be mature enough to ‘be a big man’.
“I have had some disagreements during my playing career but I have never been abusive to referees, officials or officials. I say this because there are times when you need to be a great guy. all the time. I felt like a child’s fault from Pant. He’s a kid. He’s just a captain, he’s passionate … there’s no doubt about it. He’s extremely talented.
Akhtar highlighted Pant’s need for more kindness with the example of Pakistan’s exit during the 2006 Oval Test against England. On the 4th day of the Test match, the stadium referees gave the England team five runs without mentioning Pakistan or its captain Inzamam-Ul-Haq that the football situation had changed. Pakistan refused to enter the stadium in the final session and lost to England. Akhtar said he did not agree with the decision at the time.
“It wasn’t football, I agree. Pant was right. But if the referee said that, you were lowering your protest. You can’t just call the teams back like that. Then in 2005 during the Oval Test, Inzamam took over. The whole team came back out, I was not happy. “I told the chairman it was not the right thing to do. This is against the spirit of the game. Finish the game and don’t lose,” Akhtar said.
