A major power outage has hit Pakistan, leaving major cities without power due to transmission line failure.
Imran Rana, spokesperson for K-Electric, said on Twitter “There are reports of several outages from different parts of the city. We are investigating the issue and will update the area”.
Pakistan’s Geo News confirmed the development and reported that several areas in Karachi and Lahore were without electricity.
“#BREAKING: Power down in #Pakistan since 7:30am,” Pakistani journalist Asad Ali Toor tweeted.
According to Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO), two transmission lines from Guddu to Quetta were down. The company added that 22 areas of Balochistan, including Quetta, are without power.
Pakistan announced a new energy-saving plan this month as its fragile economy continues to face a host of challenges, including the country’s foreign exchange reserves dwindling to alarmingly low levels.
In early October last year, Pakistan experienced a major power outage that left large parts of the country, including the provincial capitals Karachi and Lahore, without power for more than 12 hours.
