The United States, Japan and South Korea said in a joint statement that they discussed regularizing missile defense and anti submarine exercises to deter and respond to North Korea’s nuclear mission and missile threats.
The announcement was made at the 13th Trilateral Defense Talks held in Washington, D.C. to exchange assessments of the security environment on the Korean Peninsula and the wider region as well as consult on concrete ways to deepen trilateral security cooperation, the joint statement said.
Submarine exercises to detect North Korea’s nuclear mission
Representatives of the three countries urged the DPRK to immediately stop all destabilizing activities and reaffirmed that if the DPRK’s nuclear test is carried out it will meet with a strong and decisive response from the international community, the statement said using North Korea’s official name.
It follows North Korea’s announcement on Friday that it had tested a new solid-fueled intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), a development intended to give its forces a radical boost that experts say will make it easier to launch missiles without warning.
