Seoul: North Korea has “most strongly denounced” the declaration made at the recent NATO summit, according to a report by KCNA, the state news agency. The statement, attributed to the country’s foreign ministry spokesperson, criticizes the summit’s outcomes, particularly the emphasis on Ukraine’s potential membership in NATO and the coalition’s tougher stance on China’s support for Russia.
“The ‘Washington Summit Declaration,’ cooked up and made public on July 10, goes to prove that the U.S. and NATO, reduced to a tool for its confrontation, pose the most serious threat to global peace and security,” KCNA quoted the spokesperson.
North Korea further accused the U.S. of exacerbating regional tensions and provoking a global arms race by expanding military alliances with NATO countries and Asian partners, including South Korea and Japan. The spokesperson claimed these moves are the “vicious root cause” of heightened regional instability and international security challenges.
The NATO summit declaration called on China to end all material and political support for Russia’s war efforts in Ukraine. It also alleged that Iran and North Korea have been supplying direct military support to Russia in the conflict.
In a related development, South Korea and the United States signed a guideline on the sidelines of the NATO summit. This agreement aims to establish an integrated system of extended deterrence on the Korean peninsula to counter nuclear and military threats from North Korea.
