Netflix Inc is testing is a new feature that will allow the accounts to be shared outside the account members’ household at an extra cost, the online streaming giant said on Wednesday.
The company is currently testing the said feature in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru by permitting the members on its standard and premium plans to add up to two people.
Similarly, Netflix is examining another feature that will allow the members on its basic, standard and premium plans to transfer their profile information to a new account or a sub account, all the while retaining their viewing history and personalized recommendations data.
Currently, the company allows people who live together to share their Netflix account. The company said that the plans have created some confusion about when and how the members can share their accounts. The company said the issue is hampering its ability to invest in new content.
The company said the upcoming features will be thoroughly tested for their practicality and usefulness before any changes are rolled out in other parts of the world.
In January, the company modified its growth expectations, projecting customer additions in the first-quarter at less than half of what Wall Street had expected. Netflix cited the late arrival of the anticipated content as the reason for low customer additions.
Netflix had recently raised the subscription prices in the UK and Ireland, giving reasons that it will use the money to invest in creating newer and original content.
