SATCOM Networks to operate Satellite Ships

NASA has selected six American satellite communications providers (SATCOM) on April 20 to begin developing and deploying nearby Earth telecommunications services that could support future agency missions. For more than a year, the organization is exploring the possibility of using SATCOM networks to operate near Earth as it works to disrupt the operation of its satellite ships near Earth. This approach will allow NASA to focus more time and resources on its mission of deep exploration and science.

The total value of the Communication Services (CSP) funded agreements is $ 278.5 million. NASA expects each company to match or exceed agency contributions over a five-year period of development and demonstration, which includes more than $ 1.5 billion in capital budget investment.

Each company has proposed a technical approach to reducing costs, increasing flexibility, and improving the performance of a wide range of equipment. The agreements create opportunities to develop new solutions that can meet the future needs of NASA’s equipment while supporting each company’s business model, future customers, and SATCOM’s growing commercial market.

Funded companies are:

• Inmarsat Government Inc. of Reston, Virginia, was awarded $ 28.6 million. Inmarsat’s proposed approach demonstrates a commercial radio network geostationary orbiting L-band relay of SATCOM low-cost aircraft services and conventional vehicle delivery, emergency operations, launch and escalation, and first phase operational communications.

• Kuiper Government Solutions (KGS) LLC of Arlington, Virginia, was awarded $ 67 million. Kuiper’s proposed approach demonstrates the optical low-Earth commercial network for circulating SATCOM’s high-performance and low-to-orientation into Earth’s low-orientation in normal travel, emergency operations, and first-phase communications.

• SES Government Solutions in Reston, Virginia, was awarded $ 28.96 million. The proposed SES method features C-band radio networks orbiting the center of the earth to receive SATCOM high-quality and low-cost satellite services at low-Earth beats for normal travel, emergency operations, launching and escalation, and first phase communications of operation.

• Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) of Hawthorne, California, was awarded $ 69.95 million. The proposed SpaceX approach demonstrates the optical low-Earth commercial network of circular transmission of SATCOM’s advanced high-altitude services to Earth’s low-oriented space, emergency operations, launch and ascent, and first-phase communications.

• Telesat U.S. Services LLC of Arlington, Virginia, was awarded $ 30.65 million. The proposed Telesat method features a C-band radio frequency geostationary orbiting orbiting C-band and Ka-band underground circuits for high-quality and low-cost communications services in a spacecraft orbiting ground.

• Viasat Incorporated of Carlsbad, California, was awarded $ 53.3 million. Viasat’s proposed route features a geostationary commercial radio network surrounding the Ka-band relay of low-cost and low-cost communications services to a low-Earth spacecraft for standard launch and operations.

Each company will complete technological improvements and in-house exhibitions by 2025 to prove that their proposed solution will deliver jobs focused on robust, reliable, and affordable equipment, including new high-tech and high-tech communications capabilities. NASA aims to seek more long-term contracts to acquire operational resources near Earth by 2030, while rolling out NASA’s managed and operational systems.
