Prime Minister Narendra Modi witnessed a high-stakes game of bullet chess between Indian chess prodigies R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi during a celebratory visit by India’s Chess Olympiad-winning teams to his residence. The encounter, shared via a video on PM Modi’s social media, showcased the sharp skills of the two Grandmasters who were pivotal in India’s historic double gold triumph at the 45th Chess Olympiad.
In the recently concluded Olympiad, India’s men’s and women’s chess teams both secured gold medals for the first time, a milestone that elevated the country to the elite group of nations achieving such a feat. Following this success, PM Modi hosted the teams at his residence to celebrate their achievements.
Sharing the bullet chess moment with the public, PM Modi tweeted, “Bullet Chess by two Grandmasters. Incredible! India’s chess future is very bright,” highlighting his admiration for the young talents.
India’s men’s team, consisting of D Gukesh, R Praggnanandhaa, Arjun Erigaisi, Vidit Gujrathi, and Pentala Harikrishna, clinched gold with a decisive 3.5-0.5 victory over Slovenia in the final round. The win was secured by strong performances from Gukesh and Arjun, while Praggnanandhaa and Vidit later added to the team’s dominant scoreline.
On the women’s side, Harika Dronavalli, R Vaishali, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Agarwal, and Tania Sachdev powered India to victory against Azerbaijan, matching the men’s score of 3.5-0.5. Key wins from Harika, Divya, and Vantika sealed India’s triumph, with Vaishali drawing her game to complete the historic double gold.
The remarkable achievements at the Chess Olympiad have propelled India into global chess prominence, and with the backing of leaders like PM Modi, the future of Indian chess appears even brighter.
