Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded the medal efforts of several athletes at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games following a streak of podium finishes for India. He congratulated Achanta Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan for winning the men’s doubles silver medal. “More power to teamwork! Happy to see the dynamic team of @sharathkamal1 and @sathiyantt win the silver medal in men’s doubles. We wish all the best to all these great athletes,” Modi said.

The Prime Minister congratulated the Indian mixed doubles pair of Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal for winning a bronze medal in squash at the Commonwealth Games. “It is always a pleasure to see our athletes excelling in various sports at the CWG. Congratulations to @SauravGhosal and @DipikaPallikal for winning the bronze medal in squash mixed doubles. They have shown great skills and teamwork. We wish them the best of luck,” he said. He also appreciated the efforts of the women’s hockey team to win the bronze medal and said that it is certain that every Indian is proud of the exceptional team.

The prime minister also praised the athletes for their medal rush in athletics disciplines. Annu Rani became the first Indian javelin thrower to win a medal at the Commonwealth Games on the penultimate day in Birmingham on Sunday. Rani sent the javelin 60m in her fourth attempt to win the bronze medal for the country. “Annu Rani is a remarkable athlete. She has shown great resilience and demonstrated top-notch ability. Glad she won a bronze medal in javelin. Congratulations to her. I am sure she will continue to excel in the years to come,” Modi tweeted.

Eldhose Paul led India in a historic 1-2 finish in the men’s triple jump as he won a rare track and field gold medal, followed by fellow Kerala athlete Abdulla Aboobacker. Paul produced a personal best of 17.03m in his third attempt, while Aboobacker was not far behind, finishing at 17.02m, which he managed in his fifth attempt. “Today’s Triple Jump event is historic. Our athletes performed brilliantly. Congratulations to the extremely talented Eldhose Paul who won the gold medal and backed up his good performance in previous international competitions. His determination is commendable,” Modi tweeted.

In another tweet, the Prime Minister expressed his delight that Aboobacker won silver in the Triple Jump event. “The medal is the result of a lot of hard work and remarkable commitment. All the best in his future endeavours,” he said. India’s Sandeep Kumar also won bronze in the men’s 10,000m with a personal best time. “It is good to see our race walking contingent excelling at the Birmingham Games. Congratulations to Sandeep Kumar for winning the bronze medal in the 10,000m event. We wish him all the best in his upcoming endeavours,” Modi said. This morning, when Modi tagged a video of Indian wrestler Pooja Gehlot breaking down and apologizing to people after winning the bronze medal in women’s 50kg freestyle, Modi said, “Pooja, your medal calls for celebration, not apology.”Your life journey motivates us, your success makes us happy. Modi also praised wrestler Pooja Sihag for winning bronze and said she has established herself as a talented wrestler. “She overcame many challenges with her never say die attitude. She won bronze at CWG 2022. Congratulations to her. I am sure she will continue to make India proud in times to come,” he said. Celebrating wrestler Deepak Nehra’s bronze medal win, Modi said he had shown remarkable courage and commitment. “I wish him all the best in his upcoming endeavours,” he added.Modi also congratulated Bhavina Patel for winning the gold medal in the Women’s Para Table Tennis (TT) singles. “The remarkable @BhavinaOfficial gives us yet another opportunity to be proud! She wins the prestigious gold medal in Para Table Tennis, her first CWG medal. I hope her achievements motivate the Indian youth to take up table tennis. I wish Bhavina all the best for her upcoming endeavours, he said.
