In one of Delhi’s worst fires, at least 27 people lost their lives when a blaze engulfed a three-story building in Mundka in West Delhi; a few people were seriously injured. The building – which used to have office space – is close to the Mundka municipal station. More than 50 people have been evacuated to a safer area for major rescue operations; at least 12 were injured. The death toll from the tragedy is likely to rise. Fire chief Atul Garg said the building did not have a fire clearance certificate or NOC. The owner runs away.
Firefighting and rescue operations began shortly after the fire was reported on Friday evening. The blaze reportedly broke out on the first floor of a building occupied by the office of the company that manufactures CCTV cameras and Wi-Fi routers, officials said. Two factory owners – Harish Goel and Varun Goel – were arrested overnight.
“The building did not have a fire NOC (certificate of non-compliance). The owner of the building was identified as ManisLakra who lived on the upper floor. Lakra is absent, teams are on duty and will be arrested soon,” said DCP (deputy police commissioner) Sameer Sharma (outer region).
