Mumbai: The Mumbai Police issued an advisory on Thursday urging residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary on Friday, in response to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) “red alert” prediction until 8:30 am. Despite this, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced that schools and colleges would remain open.
The IMD’s red alert for July 26 predicts extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms throughout the day, which is expected to exacerbate traffic congestion, waterlogging, and public travel disruptions.
“IMD has declared a red alert for Mumbai till tomorrow morning 8:30 am. Requesting all Mumbaikars to stay indoors, until essential. Please stay safe,” the Mumbai Police posted on X, advising residents to dial 100 for emergencies.
Despite the police advisory, the BMC declared that the current weather and rainfall conditions are normal, ensuring that educational institutions will operate as usual. “Parents are humbly requested not to believe any other information or rumors regarding school and college holidays and to rely only on official information from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation,” the BMC stated on X.
The heavy rain on Thursday resulted in the cancellation of nearly a dozen flights and the diversion of ten others to nearby areas. Additionally, waterlogging on train tracks caused delays in local train services. Rainfall measurements over the last 24 hours recorded 44 mm in Mumbai city, 90 mm in the eastern suburbs, and 89 mm in the western suburbs, leading to severe traffic congestion and flooding of streets and homes.
