Jammu: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to launch his election campaign on Saturday with a mega rally in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district. This marks the first visit by a sitting Prime Minister to Doda in 42 years, adding historical significance to the event.
Multi-layered security arrangements have been put in place across the districts of Doda and Kishtwar, particularly around the rally venue at Doda Stadium, ensuring a safe and peaceful gathering. Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy, also the BJP election in-charge for Jammu & Kashmir, confirmed the rally details during a press briefing in Samba, noting the long anticipation since the last Prime Ministerial visit in 1982.
PM Modi’s rally is expected to energize BJP candidates in the region ahead of the Assembly elections. Voting for the eight seats in the Chenab Valley districts—Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban—is scheduled for September 18. The rally is viewed as a strategic move to solidify BJP’s position, especially in Jammu, a party stronghold where BJP swept all 25 seats during the 2014 elections.
This election marks the first since the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A and the first Assembly election in Jammu & Kashmir in 10 years. BJP leaders believe PM Modi’s visit will boost their electoral chances across the union territory.
Voting for the J&K Assembly will be held in three phases: September 18, 25, and October 1, with results expected on October 8.
