On the occasion of National Teachers’ Day, PM Narendra Modi announced a new initiative – PM SHRI Schools

On the occasion of National Teachers’ Day, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi announced a new initiative – PM SHRI Schools (PM Schools for Rising India). This will be a new centrally sponsored program for modernization and development of more than 14,500 schools across the country by strengthening selected existing schools from among the schools run by the Central Government/State/UT Government/Local Bodies. PM SHRI schools will introduce all components of the National Education Policy 2020 and act as model schools and also offer mentoring to other schools in their vicinity.

These schools will aim not only at quality teaching, learning and cognitive development, but also at creating holistic and well-rounded individuals equipped with key 21st century skills. The pedagogy adopted in these schools will be more experiential, holistic, integrated, play/toy-based (especially in the primary grades), inquiry-oriented, discovery-oriented, learner-oriented, discussion-oriented, flexible and fun. Emphasis will be placed on achieving proficiency in each child’s learning outcomes at each grade level. Assessment at all levels will be based on conceptual understanding and application of knowledge to real life situations and will be competency based.

These schools will be equipped with modern infrastructure including laboratories, smart classrooms, libraries, sports equipment, art room etc. which will be inclusive and accessible. These schools should also be developed as green schools with water conservation, waste recycling, energy efficient infrastructure and integration of green lifestyle into the curriculum. They will provide leadership in their regions in providing high quality education in a fair, inclusive and joyful school environment that caters for the diverse backgrounds, multilingual needs and different academic abilities of children and makes them active participants in their own learning process. according to the NEP 2020 vision.
