Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to all those who lost their lives during Partition and praised the resilience and grit of those who suffered during this tragic period of history. Last year, Prime Minister Modi had announced that August 14 would be observed as Partition Remembrance Day to commemorate the struggles and sacrifices of the people.
“Today, on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, I pay tribute to all those who lost their lives during Partition and applaud the tenacity and determination of all who suffered during this tragic period in our history,” Modi said in a tweet. Pakistan was carved out as a separate country after the partition of India by the British in 1947. Millions of people were displaced and many millions lost their lives in the communal violence that followed.
