Michigan Man Receives Rare Face Transplant After Surviving Suicide Attempt

November 22, 2024: A 30-year-old Michigan man, Derek Pfaff, has become one of the few individuals in the world to undergo a successful face transplant. The rare and complex surgery, performed at the Mayo Clinic earlier this year, marks a new chapter in Mr. Pfaff’s life after a tragic suicide attempt left him severely disfigured.

The transformative procedure, which lasted more than 50 hours and involved a team of 80 healthcare professionals, is a groundbreaking success in medical science. Only about 50 face transplants have been performed globally over the past two decades, highlighting the extraordinary nature of Mr. Pfaff’s recovery.

A Second Chance at Life
Mr. Pfaff’s journey to the transplant was a long and painful one. Over the past decade, he had undergone 58 reconstructive facial surgeries but still struggled with basic functions like eating, speaking, and even wearing glasses due to the absence of a nose.

“After my last surgery, the doctor told my parents that there’s nothing more he could do except refer us to a place to get a face transplant,” Mr. Pfaff shared in a video released by the Mayo Clinic.

Today, with 85% of his face reconstructed using donor tissue—including his nose, jaws, teeth, eyelids, and cheek structure—he feels reborn.

“This surgery has transformed my life. I feel so much more confident,” he said. “I want to help others. I am so grateful to my donor, his family, and my care team for giving me this second chance.”

In March 2014, at the age of 19, Derek attempted to end his life while home on college spring break. Despite a devastating gunshot injury, he survived against all odds.

His mother, Lisa Pfaff, recalled the harrowing night: “Shortly after 1:30 a.m., we found him outside by the garage. The doctors told us there was no way Derek was going to make it.”

But Derek defied the prognosis. Over the years, his resilience and the support of his family paved the way for the historic surgery that would change his life.

Medical Milestone and Hope for Others
The success of Mr. Pfaff’s face transplant is not just a medical triumph but also a symbol of hope for those battling similar circumstances. His story highlights the importance of organ donation and advanced medical technology in offering second chances.
“People have called it a miracle, and it truly is,” said his mother, Lisa.
Derek now plans to use his experience to inspire and help others facing similar challenges. His journey, though born from tragedy, stands as a testament to human resilience and the power of cutting-edge medicine.
