The knife used by the accused in the gruesome Shahbad Dairy murder in Delhi was bought from Haridwar about 15 days ago and was dumped near Rithala Metro station after the crime, police said on Tuesday.
Police say they are still looking for the knife. The accused planned the murder two days ago after the 16-year-old girl Sakshi rejected him in front of her friends and refused to mend their relationship, police said.
Sahil, 20, stabbed Sakshi more than 20 times and then hit her with a cement slab, killing her on the spot. She was found to have 34 injuries on her body and her skull was fractured. In his statement to the police, which is part of the FIR, the victim’s father said that his daughter knew Sahila and that she often mentioned his name.
“She was friends with him for a year. We tried to make her understand that she is young and should focus on her studies. But whenever we told her to stay away from Sahil, she would get upset and go to her friend’s place,” said the girl’s father.
Sahil admitted to the police that he bought the knife from Haridwar, but often changed his statement to mislead the investigators, the officer said.
According to the police, since Sahil had bought the knife days before the incident, it is not unlikely that he planned to kill her. Still, he claimed he killed the girl in a fit of rage because she kept ignoring him.
“His statements are being verified. Sometimes he says that she ignored him, which made him angry. But he also suspected that Sakshi was involved with her ex-boyfriend,” the officer said.
According to the police, Sahil might have been planning to attack the girl for some time as she had started seeing her ex-boyfriend Praveen. She was in a relationship with Praveen for three to four years before falling in love with Sahil, they said.
Sahil claimed that Sakshi wanted to get back to Praveen because he had a motorbike, police said. On Saturday, Sakshi warned Sahil to stay away from her. At that time she was with her boyfriend Bhawna and her boyfriend Jhabru. Jhabru also threatened to beat up Sahila if she came close to Sakshi, police said.
The girl broke up with Sahil eight days ago. Police also said that Sakshi had mentioned the name of her friend Neetu’s husband, a known criminal in the area, to threaten Sahil.
According to the police, Sakshi and Sahil were seeing each other since June 2021. But for the last three to four months, she started distancing herself from the accused.
Sahil got drunk on Sunday afternoon and in the evening confronted Sakshi, who was on her way to her friend’s child’s birthday party, after changing her clothes in a public establishment, police said.
After killing her, Sahil went to a nearby park and sat there for a while. Later, the accused went to Rithala Metro Station where he claimed to have thrown the knife in the nearby bushes. He then took a bus to Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh from Anand Vihar bus terminus, police said Sahil was arrested from Bulandshahr after his aunt called his father, he was traced to the spot. He was brought to the capital late on Monday evening.
According to police, Praveen, also in his 20s, is in Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh and has been asked to come to Delhi and join the investigation. Sahil was produced in a Delhi court, which sent him to police custody for two days. Police said they will recreate the crime scene and also check Sahil’s mobile phone and social media accounts to know if he was in contact with other girls.
According to the police, none of the bystanders called the police. It was a police informer who alerted the police about the incident after which a team was rushed to the spot around 9.30 pm after a 25-minute appointment, a police official said. In a tweet, Special CP Sanjay Singh urged people to call the police when facing such an emergency.
