Dr. Daniel Amen, a prominent psychiatrist and brain-imaging researcher from California, recently emphasized this connection, particularly in relation to depression.
In a TikTok video shared last week, Dr. Amen stressed that individuals battling depression should avoid junk food, noting that poor dietary choices can significantly worsen their mental state. “Your gut health is critical to brain health,” Dr. Amen stated. “If you have an ultra-processed food diet, you have a dramatically increased risk of struggling with depression.”
The concept of the gut-brain connection has gained traction in recent years. Researchers have long explored how the gut and brain constantly communicate through a network of nerves and chemical signals. For example, stress can trigger gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea or diarrhea, while the brain signals the gut to prepare for food digestion.
A key player in this relationship is the gut microbiome, the collection of bacteria, viruses, and fungi in our digestive system. These microbes produce chemicals that influence brain function and mood. Dr. Amen explains that over 100 trillion microbes make up the microbiome, which he refers to as “bugs” or “pets” that need to be fed properly. “You have to feed your gut bugs healthy foods, fiber, colorful fruits and vegetables, and healthy protein in order for your gut to support your brain,” he advises.
Studies from institutions like the National Institutes of Health have shown that consuming junk food can lead to various health issues, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, digestive problems, high blood pressure, and depression. Dr. Amen’s message reinforces the idea that maintaining a healthy diet not only benefits the body but also plays a vital role in supporting mental well-being.
