After ruling the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for 15 years, is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) set to lose the 2022 civic elections? Yes, if the exit poll results are to be believed and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) which is running the Delhi government is likely to take control of the MCD. But ahead of the counting of votes for the MCD poll on Tuesday, the BJP exuded hope that the tide would turn in its favour, even as the AAP claimed a “sweeping” victory as predicted by exit polls.
Top 10 points in the MCD poll results:
1. All offices are ready for the counting of votes polled in Delhi’s municipal elections, with officials saying 42 centers have been set up for Wednesday’s exercise, which will begin at 8 am amid tight security.
2. Delhi recorded a voter turnout of 50.48 percent in the closely watched poll held on December 4, the results of which may have ramifications beyond the national capital.
3. There are 250 constituencies in MCD and 1,349 candidates are in the fray in this election.
4. Monday’s exit polls showed that AAP was poised to sweep the MCD elections by winning more than 150 city constituencies, with the BJP emerging as the runner-up.
5. AAP leaders, who are in an upbeat mood after the positive predictions, also claimed that the party will do better than the exit poll trends. “We expect better results than the exit polls predicted. These exit polls also show that people rejected all the allegations leveled by the BJP (against AAP) and voted for a good job,” Durgesh Pathak, MCD survey in-charge of AAP agency. , he told PTI.
6. AAP National Convenor and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal thanked the people as polls predicted a massive victory for the party.
7. A somber mood prevailed at the BJP office in Delhi ahead of the results, where party leaders were hoping that the exit polls would prove wrong when the votes were counted. Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said it would be too early to give up on the poll prediction.
8. The defeat will also dent the BJP’s hopes of weakening the Kejriwal-led AAP’s political dominance in Delhi and further reducing its chances in the 2025 assembly.
9. However, the defeat, which seems unlikely in the light of exit poll predictions, will shake the AAP, which has registered massive victories in the Delhi assembly polls in 2015 and 2020.
10. BJP defeated both AAP and Congress by winning 181 out of 272 constituencies of three municipal corporations in 2017 elections. AAP won 48 and Congress 30 constituencies in its debut in civic polls.
