Four people were killed and 18 others injured after a truck rammed into a bus in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Sunday, police said. The accident took place around 2 am near a temple on the Mumbai-Bengaluru national highway, they said.
When a private passenger bus heading from Satara to Dombivli in Thane reached the Swaminarayan Temple, it was hit from behind by a truck, a police official said.
Three passengers of the bus and the truck driver were killed while 18 passengers sustained injuries, he said. The truck driver prima facie lost control of the vehicle and as a result rammed into the bus, the official said.
After being alerted, an emergency medical service team arrived at the scene and provided assistance to the victims. Thirteen injured passengers were taken to various hospitals in Pune, including Navale Hospital, Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Sassoon Hospital. Other injured passengers were admitted to nearby hospitals, officials said.
Pune Zilla Parishad General Manager Ayush Prasad said driver fatigue is a serious problem that needs to be addressed to prevent such accidents. “It is imperative that all citizens take the necessary precautions when driving at night. Get enough rest before you travel, take regular breaks and be aware of other drivers on the road,” he said.
Prasad also stressed the importance of reporting rash and careless driving to the police. “If you notice someone driving rashly, keep a safe distance and call the police to report it,” he added.
