Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin lands NASA contract to develop lunar lander for astronauts

After winning the contract, jeff Bezos took to Twitter to express his delight and emphasized how the project would eventually lead to deep space exploration.

NASA has awarded Jeff Bezos’ space company Blue Origin a contract to develop a lunar lander that would take astronauts to the moon. Bezos’ company will build on the success of NASA’s Artemis mission, which aims to explore the moon far more than ever before, uncover more scientific discoveries, and prepare for future astronaut missions to Mars.

“Today, we are excited to announce that Blue Origin will build the Human Landing System as NASA’s second provider to carry Artemis astronauts to the lunar surface. We are in the golden age of human spaceflight, made possible by NASA’s commercial and international partnerships. Together, we are investing in the infrastructure that will pave the way for the first astronauts to land on Mars,” NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said Friday.

After winning the contract, Bezos took to Twitter to express his delight and emphasized how the project would eventually lead to deep space exploration.

“Honored to be on this journey with @NASA to land astronauts on the moon – this time to stay. Together we will solve the boiling problem and make LOX-LH2 a storable propellant combination that will advance the state of the art for all deep space missions,” Bezos tweeted .

Notably, in 2021, Elon Musk’s SpaceX received $3 billion to land astronauts on the moon through the first Artemis lunar lander. SpaceX missions are scheduled to take place this decade.

Interestingly, Blue Origin’s national team partners for the project will include Lockheed Martin, Draper, Boeing, Astrobotic and Honeybee Robotics. Under the contract, the entire team will work to solve the boiling problem and increase the performance of LOX-LH2, which will power the lunar lander.
