Lionel Messi made a triumphant return to the pitch on Sunday, scoring twice in Inter Miami’s 3-1 victory over Philadelphia Union. Messi, who had been sidelined with an ankle injury since Argentina’s Copa America final win against Colombia on July 14, showcased his brilliance in his comeback match.
Philadelphia took an early lead in the second minute, courtesy of Mikael Uhre. However, Messi led Inter Miami’s comeback with a sensational brace. In the 26th minute, he received a pass from former teammate Luis Suarez, dribbled past a defender, and scored with a left-footed strike, leveling the score at 1-1. Just four minutes later, Messi found the net again, slotting a shot past the goalkeeper from 15 yards out, giving Miami a 2-1 lead. In stoppage time, Messi assisted Suarez, who sealed the 3-1 victory.
Speaking after the match, Messi admitted to feeling fatigued due to the Miami heat and humidity but was eager to return after being away for so long. “I started training with the group and began to feel better,” said Messi.
As speculation grows over Messi’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, his former teammate and Argentina legend, Juan Roman Riquelme, expressed confidence that the 37-year-old star will be part of the tournament. “Messi is reinventing himself… I have no doubt that he will play in the next World Cup,” Riquelme said in an interview on AZZ Channel.
Messi’s performance continues to captivate fans, with many eagerly anticipating his future achievements on the international stage.
