Britain’s King Charles used his Christmas Day message to encourage people to extend kindness, compassion, and care for the environment during a time of economic hardship and global conflict. In his second Christmas message since becoming king, the 75-year-old monarch emphasized the importance of supporting those less fortunate and expressed gratitude for volunteers, charity workers, and individuals dedicating their holidays to caring for others.
Speaking beside a living Christmas tree in a departure from tradition, King Charles highlighted the need to build on existing ways to support those facing hardship. The tree, which will be replanted, featured natural and sustainable decorations such as pine cones and paper—a nod to the king’s longstanding commitment to environmental causes.
“We care for the Earth for the sake of our children’s children,” remarked King Charles, who delivered the message from the Centre Room at Buckingham Palace. He expressed satisfaction with the growing awareness of the necessity to protect the Earth and the natural world, acknowledging the shared responsibility for the planet.
The king, who assumed the throne in September 2022 following the passing of Queen Elizabeth, addressed the global conflicts affecting various regions, stating, “At a time of increasingly tragic conflict around the world, I pray that we can also do all in our power to protect each other.”
Referring to his role as the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, King Charles highlighted the universal values represented by the Christian teaching of doing good to others, emphasizing its relevance in the present context.
