Some medicinal syrups available in Indonesia contained ingredients linked to fatal acute kidney injury (AKI) in children, its health minister said on Thursday as he investigates a surge in cases and 99 child deaths this year.
Indonesia has temporarily banned the sale of all syrup-based medicines and is closely monitoring paracetamol syrups used topically to treat fever in children, which contain diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol.
The Gambian government is also investigating AKI deaths in children linked to paracetamol syrups after 70 deaths there. The syrups were made by New Delhi-based Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd, which India says is under investigation by India.
Indonesia’s Food and Drug Agency said these particular products are not available locally. Ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol were detected in products found in some patients’ homes, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said Thursday, without specifying how much.
