Despite past tensions, Kangana Ranaut has expressed her admiration for veteran actor and politician Jaya Bachchan, highlighting her contributions to Indian cinema and her dignified presence in public life. In a recent interview with News18, Kangana called Jaya Bachchan one of the most “dignified” women in the film industry today.
Reflecting on Jaya Bachchan’s impact, Kangana said, “Jaya Bachchan ji is a very reputed actor of our film industry. Honestly, she’s known for her short temper, but at the same time, I’d like to give her the acknowledgement and due credit that in those times… you can imagine that in the 1970s, at a time when women had to roast their skin in the (harsh) lighting, she did films like Guddi back then. She sent a message of women empowerment through that. And even after that… she’s one of the most dignified women in the film industry.”
Kangana also praised Jaya’s political career, stating, “The way she carries herself in Rajya Sabha, I feel very good that we have this kind of representation from the film industry.”
Addressing their past disagreement in 2020, when Jaya Bachchan spoke in Parliament about the criticism the film industry faced after the death of Sushant Singh Rajput, Kangana responded with grace. “That’s fine. If we say something to each other… I believe she’s elder to us. If she said something to us, we should take it in stride,” Kangana said.
Jaya Bachchan, who made her acting debut in Satyajit Ray’s Mahanagar (1963), is renowned for her roles in iconic films such as Guddi (1971), Zanjeer, Sholay, Abhimaan, and Silsila. In the early 2000s, she made a successful return to cinema with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and was last seen in Karan Johar’s 2023 blockbuster Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. A recipient of the Padma Shri, Jaya Bachchan is also an active member of the Rajya Sabha.
Meanwhile, Kangana Ranaut is gearing up for the release of her next project, Emergency, in which she will portray former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
