U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris has called for an end to the nearly year-long Israel-Gaza conflict and stressed that Israel must not reoccupy the Palestinian territory after the war concludes. Speaking at the National Association of Black Journalists in Philadelphia, Harris urged for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and pushed for a two-state solution that ensures long-term peace in the Middle East without strengthening Iran’s influence in the region.
The conflict, which began on October 7, has resulted in over 41,000 deaths and nearly 100,000 injuries in Gaza, according to the health ministry in the Hamas-controlled area. Harris highlighted the importance of peace and stability in the region, while expressing support for diplomatic solutions.
In addition to international issues, Harris also addressed concerns about the economy, promising to work on housing affordability and expanding the child tax credit to $6,000 if she is elected president. Harris continues to court Black voters, a critical group in the upcoming 2024 election, and responded to concerns over growing support for Donald Trump among younger Black men. Both Harris and Trump are focusing on key battleground states, including Pennsylvania and Georgia, as they vie for the presidency.
