Safdarjung Hospital became the first central hospital to deliver an in-vitro fertilization (IVF) baby

At Safdarjung Hospital, a 36-year-old woman gave birth to a baby boy for the first time through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) on Friday, doctors at the hospital said. Dr BL Sherwal, medical superintendent of the hospital, said on Saturday that Safdarjung Hospital has become the first central government facility to successfully deliver a baby through IVF.

The current head of the IVF department, and her team,” Sherwal said “The important project of IVF facility in Obstetrics and Gynecology Department in any central government hospital became a reality on the auspicious day of Lohri, Friday when the first IVF baby was born. The baby was delivered by Professor Bindu Bajaj, both mother and child are currently stable and recovering in hospital”.

Although this is the first such feat for a central government-run institution, in 2008 Delhi’s Lok Nayak Hospital became the first government facility in the capital to deliver twins – a girl and a boy – through IVF. The twins were born to a 29-year-old woman who was unable to conceive because both fallopian tubes were damaged.

In general, conception occurs when an egg cell (egg) is released from a woman’s ovary, travels through the fallopian tube, and is fertilized by a man’s sperm. The fertilized egg continues its journey as it undergoes numerous cell divisions. It then rests in the womb to grow.

Dr Divya Pandey, who was part of the team of doctors at Safdarjung who oversaw the IVF process until delivery, said the baby boy was born to a couple – the woman is 36 and the man is 37 – who have been married for six years. The woman had a history of previous intrauterine insemination failure. In IVF treatment, the egg and sperm are fertilized outside the woman’s body before the embryo is implanted in the uterus.

Dr. Pandey said “The birth took place on Friday at 15:00 via emergency lower segment caesarean section. It’s only been 24 hours, but both mother and baby are doing well. This is the first time that a central government hospital has successfully completed the entire process, from IVF to delivery”.

Sherwal said that the groundwork for setting up an IVF center at Safdarjung Hospital began in 2015 and the foundation of the project was completed in 2019, but the project itself got delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sherwal said “This treatment is completely free and the facility will benefit many couples who cannot have children but cannot afford expensive treatment at private clinics”.
