Digital Revolution Focus: Mobiles application developed by researchers explore behavioral issues

An app that makes a game on solving integrity research issues has been downloaded by thousands of people since its launch in 2020. The work, presented at the International Conference on Integrity Research in Cape Town, South Africa, last week, is designed to get researchers talking about issues that they may have to deal with on their own.More than 12,000 people have used the Dilemma Game app in the last 6 months, and researchers from Belgium, Nigeria, Italy, Estonia, Czech Republic, India, Denmark and Turkey are among its top users spoke to Nick den Hollander, chief policy officer at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands, where the game was developed.

Where did you get the idea?

Based on a portable card game created by partners. We conducted the survey in 2019, after the release of a new code of conduct, and it became clear that by changing the card game into an app we could make it more accessible to people. The code of conduct describes the 5 core principles of research integrity and provides a summary of 61 ‘procedures’, which define ethical conduct. The idea is that it helps committees to decide if they have done something wrong to see what is normal. There was a lot of controversy over the procedure – We tried to use this chat with the app.

Can you tell me a little bit about Dilemma Game and how it works?

The app offers different situations for people to think and talk about. These issues are written from the perspective of a PhD student, lecturer or journal editor. They give you some kind of context in an issue at stake. For example: “I am a PhD student, I submitted my article to a high quality and rejected journal. But now my boss can help me, because they know someone on the organizing committee. If I came to the paper as an author I would get it published. What should I do?”

You get four options. The first option would be: “I must reject this promise and file a complaint with the ethics committee, because my boss is trying to commit fraud.” Another possibility: “I have to add his name – it ‘s not so bad if the contents of the paper are still the same, and sometimes you have to accept some help.” And there will be two more to choose from. Once you have selected the answer, you can see how other players voted and whether you are foreign or that you meet many other people. The main purpose of the game is to keep the conversation going.

So what is the answer to that problem?

There is no right answer. But the app sometimes says what might be closest to the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity guidelines. Once you have given your answer, you can read an expert review written by a philosopher professor at Erasmus University who gives you different ideas for each answer. The purpose is to try to make you think about why you chose a particular answer.

How many challenges are there&Do you have plans to do human response research in the app?

To date, there are more than 100, and on the first Monday of each month add a new one. I have written many of them on the basis of user questions. I just got one from the manager who said, “I just started a project with a new PhD student, and I asked him to write a review. And you come up with all sorts of books that are not real books, but fake stuff and other options. What should I do? “I hope it really fits in with what people are going through. It can be really exciting to see how people from different walks of life or from the disciplinary community deal with these problems, but it is difficult because the privacy rules are very strict. We can only see how many people have downloaded the app and where they are from. Over the next year, we will try to expand the app to include other types of integrity issues, such as harassment. We can also look at how we can gather more information.
