In a recent Israeli airstrike on Sunday, nine people were killed, including a Lebanese commander from the Hezbollah group, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The strike targeted an apartment in Sayyida Zeinab, a stronghold of pro-Iranian groups south of Damascus, Syria.
The Observatory reported that among the dead were four civilians, including a woman and her three children, all of Syrian nationality, as well as five others, including the Hezbollah commander whose identity has not yet been disclosed. Additionally, 14 people were injured in the attack, which struck a residence where both Lebanese families and Hezbollah members were living.
Syria’s state news agency SANA confirmed the attack on the residential building in Sayyida Zeinab, an area known for a significant Shiite shrine. SANA also reported that seven civilians, including women and children, had died, with 20 more injured.
Israel has intensified its strikes on Syria since a conflict broke out with Hezbollah in Lebanon in late September. The Israeli government has previously stated that it opposes Iran’s growing influence in Syria and often targets military positions and fighters, especially those associated with Hezbollah. Since the start of Syria’s civil war in 2011, Israel has carried out numerous strikes in the region but typically refrains from public comment on specific operations.
