The Indian Knowledge System has solutions to many world challenges- Shri Dharmendra Pradhan

Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education and Skills Development of the Union today unveiled the book ‘Introduction to Indian Information Systems: Ideas and Applications’. Shri Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education and Shri K Sanjay Murthy, Secretary for Higher Education, Shri A.D Sahasrabudhe, Chairperson of AICTE and representatives of AICTE, IKS Division and Department of Education attended the program.

Shri Dharmendra Pradhan expressed her delight that the authors provided an educational framework for the Indian Knowledge System in the book. Shri Pradhan spoke of the global trajectory of Indian knowledge, culture, philosophy and spirituality. He spoke of the civilization of ancient India and its impact on the world. Referring to the Vedas, the Upanishads and other Indian texts, he said that our ancient heritage was filled with treasures that needed to be preserved, transcribed, and distributed. He also mentioned various examples of processes based on science and knowledge from ancient India that we can find still relevant in the world.

The minister said India’s education system was being phased out under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. While we embrace the good things of the past, we should also remember the problems in our society and build a future that creates an interaction between past knowledge and current affairs. Solutions to many of the world’s problems are found in the Indian Knowledge System, he added.

This book seeks to fill the gap provided by the required study at IKS, which has recently been accredited by AICTE. In addition, the New Education Policy (NEP) has also provided a clear indication of the provision of IKS in the higher education system, necessitating a book of this kind in several tertiary institutions in the country in the coming days. Although this book has been developed primarily for use in Engineering institutions, the structure and content are easily borrowed to meet the need for other University programs (Art of Freedom, Medicine, Science and Management) for that book. The newly released IKS textbook will enable students to bridge the gap between the traditional and the modern education system by giving students the opportunity to reconnect with the past, build a complete scientific flair and use it to conduct multidisciplinary research and innovation.

The textbook curriculum is being developed by the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore in collaboration with the VYASA Yoga Institute, Bengaluru, and ChinmayaVishwaVidyapeeth, Ernakulam. Written by Prof. B Mahadevan, IIM Bangalore and co-authored by Assoc Prof. VinayakRajat Bhat, Chanakya University, Bengaluru, and NagendraPavana R N, and the Vedic Knowledge Systems school in ChinmayaVishwaVidyapeeth, Ernakulam.

DrSubhas Sarkar highlighted the need to learn about the Indian Information System. He cited the examples of Ayurveda, ancient shipbuilding, aviation technology, the artist of the Indus Valley Cities, and the political science that existed in ancient India. He introduced the book Introduction to Indian Knowledge System which seeks to introduce the epistemology and ontology of Indian Knowledge Systems in all walks of life, to Engineering and Science students in a way that they can integrate, enjoy and explore further. Shri Sarkar went on to say that in order to develop any person, his roots must be strong and to preserve these roots, one must know about the Indian Knowledge System.

The program included a welcome speech by Prof. A.D. Sahasrabudhe, Chairman, AICTE and Author, Dr. B. Mahadevan, IIM, Bangalore among others. A vote of thanks was given to Prof. M P Poonia, Deputy Chairperson, AICTE.
