India-US relations are key to democracy, strong global economy and to overcoming China

A strong India-US relationship is essential for democracy, technological advancement and a robust global economy, a senior US senator said, stressing that close bilateral ties will be a vital counterweight to overcoming China. Senator Chuck Schumer called India one of the world’s “leading powers” and said close Indo-US relations will also be key to countering Chinese authoritarianism.

The Senate Majority Leader is leading a high-powered congressional delegation of senators to India. A delegation led by Schumer called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday. They discussed new opportunities to strengthen India-US ties in critical technologies, clean energy transition, joint development and manufacturing, and trusted and resilient supply chains.

India-US bilateral relations

The Prime Minister welcomed the Congress delegation to India and appreciated the consistent and bipartisan support of the US Congress for deepening India-US bilateral relations, his office said in a statement.

Shumer said after his hour-long meeting with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi “We need countries like India, the world’s largest democracy, to work with us to strengthen democracies in Asia and around the world, our meeting with Prime Minister Modi, we emphasized that the close ties between our two countries would be a vital counterweight to overcoming China’s competition and responding to its authoritarianism”.

He also says “India is one of the world’s “leading powers” and a strong US-India relationship is a must for democracy, technological progress and a strong global economy, I made India my first Congressional Member Delegation (CODEL) as Majority Leader to demonstrate my commitment to the important US-India relationship”.

Other members of the delegation include Senators Ron Wyden, Jack Reed, Maria Cantwell, Amy Klobuchar, Mark Warner, Gary Peters, Catherine Cortez-Masto and Peter Welch.

“I am proud that the senators in our delegation are strong representatives of America’s commitment to the US-India economic and security partnership,” he said. Schumer said that in his meeting with Modi, they discussed the growing US-India relationship and the common interests that unite the world’s two largest democracies.

“It was a substantive and productive conversation about strengthening ties on our shared strategic interests, including challenging China, combating climate change, increasing trade and deepening ties between our two countries,” he said.

He says “We emphasized that close cooperation between the US and India in areas such as artificial intelligence, green hydrogen and advanced technology manufacturing will give our two countries an advantage for decades to come. I strongly believe that the continued and strengthened relationship between the US and India will be the great defining story of the 21st century”.

All the senators expressed their determination to continue working with the Government of India to deepen bilateral relations to advance their mutual interests, he added.
