A high-powered meeting was held between Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways & Ayush Shri Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister of Railways, Communications & Electronics & Information Technology Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw in the presence of Union Minister of Health & Welfare & Chemicals & Fertiliser, Shri Mansukh Mandaviya in New Delhi today. The meeting was held to discuss and facilitate an eco-friendly container manufacturing system under the Make In India programme.
In an effort to make India ‘Atmanirbhar’ in its demand for containers, the high-powered meeting discussed various aspects in this regard. Focusing on manufacturing the cluster base, CONCOR will work closely with the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW). The meeting also discussed how the availability of Make In India containers can pave the way for domestic cargo transportation utilizing India’s vast expanse of inland waterways. Various ways and means to encourage Indian container manufacturers were also discussed. In the meeting, the ministers also discussed the possibility of transporting bulk cargo such as cement, food grains, fertilizers etc. through coastal and inland waterways in containerized form.
This will help reduce logistics costs, handling charges, as it will be through an economical, environmentally friendly and simpler mode of transportation.Earlier, a committee comprising Joint Secretary (Ports), Joint Secretary (Customs Department), Joint Secretary (Logistics), Joint Secretary (Steel), representatives from CONCOR and NICDC was formed to assess the demand for containers in domestic trade, EXIM trade as well as a problem facing domestic container production.
MoPSW also worked with representatives of CONCOR, Association of Container Train Operators (ACTO), steel companies, container manufacturers, Container Lines Association (CSLA). In the EXIM segment, the availability of containers and space on board vessels continues to improve. In the domestic segment, CONCOR has a requirement for approximately 50,000 containers in the next 3 years. The meeting was an extension of these findings to create an ecosystem that can help domestic manufacturers to manufacture Make In India containers with the ultimate goal of helping our business community in the EXIM sector and helping realize the PM’s vision of making India a USD 5 trillion. economy.
