India’s telecom network is the second largest in the world with the most affordable prices

Today, India’s telecom network is the second largest in the world with the most affordable prices. This growth has been fueled by the Modi government’s market-friendly policies,” said Shri Devusinh Chauhan, Minister of State for Communications, while elaborating on the growth success story of the telecom sector in India. Addressing the launch event of the International Telecommunication Union’s Regional Standardization Forum (RSF) for the Asia-Oceania region, he said that India’s telecom policy formulated under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is based on 3 pillars – “Easy Implementation”. Business”, for industry; “Easy of Living” for all citizens, including those living in rural and remote areas; and “Atma Nirbhar Bharat – that is – Independent India”.

As part of the celebrations during the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Ministry of Communications is organizing the Regional Standardization Forum (RSF) of the International Telecommunication Union for the Asia and Oceania region. Shri Devusinh Chauhan inaugurated the United Nations (UN) agency event here today with participants from around 20 countries of the Asia Oceania region. Several dignitaries including Mr. K. Rajaraman, Secretary (T), Government of India, Mr. Manish Sinha, Member (Finance), Digital Communications Communication (DCC), Government of India, Mr. V.L. Kantha Rao, Additional Secretary (T), Government of India along with Mr. Bilel Jamoussi, Head of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Study Group Section, Ms. Atsuko Okuda, Regional Director, ITU Regional Office for Asia Pacific attended the event.

The theme of the Regional Standardization Forum (RSF) is “Regulatory and Policy Aspects of Telecommunications/ICT”. It will be followed by a four-day meeting of the International Telecommunication Union-T Study Group 3 Regional Group Asia and Oceania (ITU-T SG3RG-AO) from 9 August 2022 to 12 August 2022. Talking about the positive and forward-looking environment created by the telecom reforms in India, Minister Shri Devusinh Chauhan said that these reforms have been able to promote healthy competition, protect the interests of consumers, replenish liquidity, encourage investment and reduce the regulatory burden on ISPs. “As a result, the recent 5G spectrum auction in India generated bids of $20 billion. This reflects the confidence and sentiment of the Indian telecom industry very well,” he said.

Shri Devusinh Chauhan said that Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi has laid down a clear plan to address the digital divide. It includes bringing optical fiber to all 6000 thousand villages in the country and also covering all these villages with 4G mobile communication. He informed the participants that around 1,75,000 villages are already equipped with optical fiber and around 5,60,000 villages have 4G mobile devices. A multibillion-dollar comprehensive plan was created that will ensure optical and mobile communications in all six hundred thousand villages by 2025.

Informing about the rollout of 5G in the country, Shri Chauhan said that the Government of India is promoting indigenously designed, developed and manufactured advanced telecommunication technology. As a result, India today has a strong domestic 5G mobile communications ecosystem. “By the end of this year, we are likely to see an indigenously developed and manufactured 5G stack deployed in India’s 5G network rollout. Our engineers have developed a set of 5G standards that will facilitate the spread of 5G in rural areas,” he said.

Emphasizing the role of ITU in sustaining and promoting the rapidly changing telecommunication/ICT environment, Shri Chauhan said that ITU plays a unifying role in creating strategic cooperation and understanding among all stakeholders. India has a long association with ITU and we share common ideals regarding the telecommunication environment. Shri Devusinh Chauhan said that in line with ITU, India is also deeply committed to connect the unconnectable and to protect and promote everyone’s right to communicate. India will continue to expand and deepen its contribution towards fulfilling the vision and goals of the ITU, he further added.
