Sports Focus: India will host the Women’s ODI World Cup after more than a decade

Big ticket cricket events are coming very fast to India. India, who will host the Men’s ODI World Cup next year, will now also host the Women’s Over-50 World Cup in 2025 as the country’s cricketing body, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) successfully bid for the tournament. mega event during the ICC annual conference which concluded in Birmingham on Tuesday.India will host the Women’s ODI World Cup after more than a decade. The last time India was the flagship destination was in 2013 when Australia were crowned champions.

Three other major ICC women’s events were also announced on Tuesday, with Bangladesh hosting the T20 World Cup in 2024 and England winning the hosting rights for the 2026 edition. The inaugural T20 Champions Trophy in 2027 will be hosted by Sri Lanka. The last major women’s global cricket event to be held in India was the 2016 World T20, but that was primarily because the ICC had previously organized both the men’s and women’s events simultaneously. However, the system changed with the exponential rise in popularity of the women’s game and the ICC separated the events to ensure proper value for the women’s game with separate broadcast deals and exclusive coverage.

“We were interested in hosting the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 and are delighted to have secured the rights to host this marquee encounter in the women’s calendar,” BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said in an ICC statement.”The sport has undergone a huge transformation since then. The popularity of women’s cricket is rising rapidly and this is a step in the right direction. The BCCI will work closely with the ICC and fulfill all requirements.”

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah said, “We are taking several steps to raise the profile of the sport right from the grassroots level and hosting the World Cup will further increase the popularity of the sport in the country.” India. We have the infrastructure in place and I am sure we will have a very successful World Cup.” However, the Women’s 50-over World Cup has been a separate event since its inception in 1973, two years before the World Cup. The men’s mega event began in England in 1975.

India has hosted the event three times – in 1978, 1997 and 2013. Those in the know of things at the ICC felt it was a shrewd call by the BCCI if they bid for the 2025 ODI event.”Since the BCCI is optimistic about starting the women’s IPL from next season, I think they would not want to host any other women’s T20 event right away. Hence, the decision to bid for the 2025 World Cup seems logical,” the source said. For the 2025 Women’s World Cup, the hosts and the top five nations from the 2022–2025 ICC Women’s Championship (IWC) will gain direct entry into the tournament. The remaining two teams will be identified through a six-team global qualifier. Of the six teams in the qualifiers, four will be from the IWC (ranked by the top five teams) and the other two will be selected based on the ICC Women’s ODI Team Rankings.
