Dr Jitendra Singh said that IMD has implemented a seamless forecasting system from the 2021 monsoon season

Union Minister of State (Independent Representative) for Science and Technology; Minister of State (Independent Representative) for Earth Sciences; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh said that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has implemented a seamless forecasting system from the 2021 monsoon season and currently forecasts are issued for periods up to a month and fortnight, a week and a few days in advance.

In a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha today, Dr. Jitendra Singh said the IMD issues the seasonal forecast for the monsoon season in two phases, on April 15 and June 1. It also issues a forecast for each month, the first day of the month or the last day of the previous month.

It issues forecast in Extended range valid for the next fortnight, Short to medium range, Daily with validity within seven days for meteorological sections, districts and blocks and now with validity within three hours at district and station level. Monthly and seasonal forecasts are issued for different regions of the country in terms of spatial distribution of rainfall, temperature probabilities rather than being restricted to a single value/category of rainfall for the country as a whole.
