Mumbai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, and other districts in Maharashtra, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next four to five days. The alert, starting from August 24, covers key regions in the Konkan belt, including Raigad and Ratnagiri.
The IMD also warned of heavy rainfall in Pune and Satara districts in western Maharashtra, as well as Amravati, Bhandara, Chandrapur, and Gondia districts in Vidarbha on Saturday. An orange alert signifies the likelihood of rainfall exceeding 64.5 mm within 24 hours, which could lead to significant disruptions and flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
In addition, a yellow alert has been issued for other districts, forecasting thunderstorms, light-to-moderate rainfall, and gusty winds ranging from 30-40 km/h.
The expected rainfall is due to a low-pressure area over northern parts of West Bengal and northeast Jharkhand, along with another system over the east-central Arabian Sea off the Maharashtra coast. These weather patterns are anticipated to bring widespread rain across Maharashtra in the next 48 hours.
Authorities have urged citizens, especially in the affected regions, to stay cautious and take necessary precautions during this period.
